This is the commemorative 1985 edition of the historic Raleigh that was ridden for the first time, by the US Olympic Team in
the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. A VERY HISTORIC BIKE. The team bike in 1980 was a HUFFY!! The Huffy
was so uncompetitive against the ultra-light racers being ridden by the Eastern Bloc teams,
THE ENTIRE US OLYMPICS CYCLING TEAM BOYCOTTED THE 1980 GAMES RATHER THAN RIDE THE HUFFY!!
The Olympics committee commissioned Raleigh, a British company, to design and make a bike worthy of the U.S. Team! The new Raleigh Technium bikes were delivered to the U.S. Riders, after 1-million miles of serious road and track testing, and the Raleigh, starting in 1984, was named the official bicycle of the U.S. Olympics cycling team. The results?
RIDING RALEIGHS, THE US OLYMPICS TEAM BROUGHT HOME FIVE GOLD MEDALS FROM THE 1984 GAMES!!
There are hardly any Team USA bikes as nice as this in the market today, making this one RARE BIRD to say the very least. Near Mint examples are almost unheard-of outside of museums. Here it is, a 25-year old American-engineered Raleigh, ready to be ridden for another 20+ years, or restored to Mint Condition and exhibited with pride.
This particular Raleigh is a small-frame bike, perfect for adults from 5'5" to 5'10". Frame measures 20", with 30" standover height. Seat height currently adjusted for me, and I'm 5'10. This bike is smooth, quiet and comfortable for long rides.
Here's Raleigh's description from their 1985 Catalog:
"The top of our Sport Touring line, the Team USA has Raleigh's 555T double-butted cro-moly main tubes, forged alloy
crankset, alloy rims, skin-wall tires, alloy micro-adjust seatpost, engraved alloy handlebars, Dia Compe brakes, and the
same graphics used on US Team Race bikes in the 1984 Olympics."
This very special Raleigh will not disappoint. Remember you get what you pay for.
