DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the school principal, assist with implementing and providing “Safe School” learning experiences, problem solving strategies, behavioral intervention strategies, behavior modification experiences, and learning activities to children with behavioral issues. Create and implement school-wide recognition program include individual recognition of student positive behaviors including monthly assemblies (attendance, academics, citizenship, etc.); confer with staff and assist with a variety of activities to enhance behavior, communication and social skills among students. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student behaviors. Consult with PLN Clinical Services as needed to further support student’s positive behaviors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
60 units, including twelve units of course work in Child Psychology, Psychology, Sociology or a combination of college education and relevant work experience working with students at risk; or work with individual students with behavioral issues. Experience involving the supervision, instruction and guidance of students in a school or agency devoted to the education, guidance and instruction of children at risk or with behavioral challenges; and/or experience with students with special needs, Special Education.
Skills/Experience:
The SAFE SCHOOL Behavioral Assistant is expected to understand basic concepts and principles of child growth and development; normal and abnormal patterns of behavior; dynamics of relationship formation; probable causes of challenging behaviors; and the effects of peers, family and sociological influences on development and behavior.
• Knowledge of child guidance principles and practices related to children at risk
• Ability to understand and relate to students with at risk
• Knowledge of student guidance principles and practices related to students demonstrating behavioral issues
• Knowledge of basic theories and practices of behavior management, behavior modification, and guidance to children with behavioral issues in the classroom, playground and during school functions
• Ability to support students in developing social skills through appropriate language and interactions
• Ability to assist children in developing a behavior modification plan
• Ability to monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress
• Ability to confer with teachers, staff and parents concerning intervention lessons/experiences to respond to student needs
• Knowledge and ability to maintain records, prepare reports, preparation techniques and follow-up
• Ability to follow written protocols and procedures as specified
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing (English/Spanish preferred)
• Knowledge and ability to apply interpersonal skills
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
Starting Salary: $13.00 hourly, depending on education and experience
Status: Non-Exempt / Part-Time, M-F: 30 hours weekly
