Are you serious in your desire to learn to play the guitar? You can make astounding progress faster than you think!
I teach from a three-pronged approach, emphasizing the following in different proportions to cater to each individual student’s needs:
1) Technique (the physical aspects of playing guitar): this includes chord fingerings in all positions on the fretboard, strumming patterns, finger picking, developing your sense of rhythm, soloing, and playing songs from start to finish.
2) Music Theory (the knowledge of what it is you are playing): understanding song structure, how chords are formed, how to locate and identify notes anywhere on the guitar, and a thorough grasp of major and minor keys and the role each note and chord plays in them.
3) Ear Training: developing your ability to distinguish between sounds, so as to imitate or identify what it is you are hearing.
These three components complement each other and strengthen your overall musicianship, allowing you the freedom to learn songs you want to play as well as giving you the tools to write your own.
